Nea Ionia and Volos are the two strong poles of the urban area in Magnesia. The establishment of the big athletic constructions here for the Olympic games this year, the potentials in alternative tourism activities and the closeness to the unique mount Pelio and the coasts of Pagasitikos gulf and Aegean sea, make Nea Ionia a centre for alternative tourism particularly in athletics and mountaineering. It 's an historical coincidence that eighty full years since the foundation of New Ionia, our town organizes this big athletic event, the Olympic games in 2004. The creation of a modern athletic cell is very important for Nea Ionia having allready the following athletic constructions: .The Panthessaliko Stadium where the football preliminary matches will take place. .A swimming and diving pool building. .The municipal Athletic centre for basket- ball and volley- ball . .The Tennis Center with 5 courts. .The "Vasdekio" Gymnasium with football court, track and gymnastics rooms. .The football court of the local football team Niki. .Hand -ball court. .Mini football courts (5x5). .and an athlete hotel near the "Panthessaliko" Stadium. The existence of the athletic constructions here favours the development in athletic tourism as well as the combination with alternative activities, as mountain walking and horseriding. On the north edges of the town paths lead to the forests of Pelio, while in the north-west side in the commune of Glafires an ancient path leads to the archeological area near the lake Karla.
